Take Up the Cross and Follow Him

Matthew 16:24-25 New King James Version (NKJV)

24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

Leftism: A Radical Faith

By Bruce A. Riggs

Much of the political history of the extended twentieth century is that of massive extinctions of citizenries by their dictatorial governments. Take the engineered mass starvations, torture chambers, firing squads, and gulags of Lenin and Stalin; Nazi gas chambers; Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge killing fields; the genocides of Mao's "Great Leap Forward"; and the tyrannical North Korean Sung dynasty, and one will find that over one hundred million people have been slaughtered.

Systematically murdering millions to create an imagined earthly Eden is clearly irrational. In this sense, leftist ideology has the look of a religious inquisition.

In his introduction to Eric Voegelin's The New Science of Politics (1), Dante Germino neatly captured Voegelin's thesis of the left as an atheistic "religion":

[M[odern Gnosticism has been dedicated to the hubristic attempt to overcome the anxieties and uncertainties of human life by building a terrestrial paradise. However well-intentioned, even the 'moderate proponents of the 'progressive' program bear a heavy responsibility for the disasters of humanity.

Others have alluded to this secular religious characterization of leftist ideology:

  • "Consider the millions of people who were killed by Stalin and Mao: although these tyrants paid lip service to rationality, communism was little more than a political religion." (2)
  • "Marxism ... was a religious atheism, a secular religion that proposed to build utopia only to open the gates of hell[.]" (3)
  • "The ability of the intellectual Left to survive the catastrophe of its Communist attachments derives from its essentially religious nature[.]" (4)

Fischer (5) put it this way:

[T]otalitarianism represents the twentieth-century version of traditional religiosity; it is in many ways the secular equivalent of the religious life. Unless this crucial point is captured, the quintessential nature of totalitarianism will elude us.

This "totalitarian religiosity" continues as a secular, politico-centric faith, disdainful of theistic beliefs and contemptuous of those who subscribe to them. It is a faith that, in its historical manifestations, has birthed the murderous tyrannies of the extended twentieth century -- tyrannies that have marched under left-wing banners of Marxism, Communism, and National Socialism, or, more generally and descriptively, Coercive Collectivism.

For the past eighty-plus years, America has been heading toward such an elitist tyranny in accordance with such socio-political contrivances as "New Deals," "Great Societies," "Fundamental Transformations," and the steady, piecemeal abrogation of the Constitution. We have not yet reached the "Heil Hitler" or "Hail Stalin" state, but we're getting closer with the hope-and-change nihilism of Critical Theory and arbitrary Postmodernist relativisms (e.g., "situational ethics").

It is asserted here that this coercive faith has the character of an endemic narcissism. It is an arrogant faith led, and largely populated, by a relentlessly aggressive, power-obsessed political class dedicated to imposing an egalitarian minimalism ("social justice") on the world.

While the classic definition of narcissism focuses on the individual, collective narcissism asserts that one can have a similar excessively high opinion of a group, and that group can function as a narcissistic entity.

In the broadest terms, this narcissistic entity is America's left-wing political establishment and the purveyor of an authoritarian collectivist faith. It is a faith largely populated by those in the high-visibility, look-at-me intellectual professions of politics, the arts, teaching, journalism, and various political foundations. All are professions inordinately able to shape the public mind both short- and long-term. As such, it is a propaganda-intensive collective that includes the left-biased "news" media and the TV and film industries.

It is further asserted that the operating ethic of this narcissistic confederacy runs from feel-good, busybody, liberal condescension (we know what's best for everyone) to the arrogance of the more radical ("progressive") wing, for whom the ends justify the means. Implicitly, such an ethic reflects an overriding need for power and control, which, along with lying, is a trait characteristic of pathological narcissism.

  • Pathological lying is one of the hallmark characteristics of [the] narcissist, who does it out of a need to manipulate and maintain control.
  • The narcissistic personality disorder trait of ... lying [self-exempts] the narcissist from [being] responsible or accountable for questionable actions.

But for the Postmodernist left, lying is so integral to the furtherance of its authoritarian, revolutionary agenda that the word has effectively been deleted from the descriptive lexicon of leftist behaviors. As Bill Clinton once explained, "[i]t depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is." For the political right, however, no such "leniencies" are tolerated, and so has arisen the left's notorious double-standard.

One thinks of Benghazi, the IRS scandal, ObamaCare, and the multiple "gate" scandals of the Clinton years -- two of which, Chinagate and Filegate, were quite likely impeachable offenses.

Narcissists have such an elevated sense of self-worth that they value themselves as inherently better than others, when in reality they have a fragile self-esteem, cannot handle criticism and will often try to compensate for this inner fragility by belittling or disparaging others in an attempt to validate their own self-worth.

One example, of many, is the unjust and absolutely vile personal smears that have been, and continue to be, leveled at Sarah Palin and her family -- narcissistic shamelessness defined. Such vitriol can only be the expression of a visceral hatred held by the activist left for conservatives who oppose the left's de facto nullifications of America's Constitutionally-established liberties.

It is a hatred fed to captive student audiences in university-classroom indoctrinating centers. It is a nihilistic hatred that shows-up in the activist left's episodic window-smashing, car-burning, look-at-us "street theatre."

But hate and fear are the obverse sides of the same psychological coin.

Arguably, the fear side of this coin is the transcendent fear of the so-called Human Condition, which plagues us all at some level of consciousness -- a fear of our eventual non-being coupled with the relentless uncertainties of life itself. Or, in the bumper-strip vernacular, "Life is hard; then you die."

[H]undreds of published academic papers have shown that worrying about death [influences] everything from our prejudices and voting patterns ... [to how] people deal with death by upholding worldviews that are larger and longer-lasting than themselves, and opposing anyone or anything that violates these 'cultural anxiety buffers'.

Many on the right find solace and guidance through the sensed presence of a transcendent Intelligence at the root of things and structure their lives accordingly. The secular-narcissistic left dismisses this outlook as fanciful nonsense while working relentlessly to establish its own fanciful nonsense of fabricating a homogenous earthly Eden out of highly disparate human material.

"[T]o the religious gnostic, reality is a delusion, a creation of false consciousness. The religious revolutionary believes humanity creates its own reality."(6)

"[I]n the arrogant ambition to transform human nature and remake the world . . . lies the true ancestry of the revolutionary Left." (7)

It's that "arrogant ambition" that defines the pathological narcissist and those who lust for leadership and the power and adulation that go with it.

One source put it this way:

  • [N]arcissists are thought to seek leadership positions specifically to garner power that enables them to 'structure an external world' that supports their grandiose needs and visions.
  • What [characterizes] these [narcissistic leaders] ... is that ultimately, their leadership is driven by their own personal egotistical needs for power and admiration rather than by an empathic concern for the constituents they lead.
  • [N]arcissists are just the type of leader to falter over time. Not only does their narcissism fuel their poor decision-making, but their [acquired] power ... fuels their narcissism, driving a downward spiral into poor leadership.
[T]he enemy [of a free society] is not ideology, but [a] pathology [in which] ... psychopathological mechanisms such as repression, projection, and deliberate misinformation serve to maintain the mass narcissism of a system literally based on mendacity.

America's antiquated, fraud-prone electoral system, crafted in a more honest era, is too easily corrupted by any monied, charismatic (8), power-lusting personality intent on fundamentally transforming America. Tons of money; media hype; and an obsolete, haphazard, easily evadable vetting process leave the door readily ajar for those with revolutionary ambitions.

The great tragedies of history occur when men or women with extreme or deviant personality traits rise to a position of great power from whence they can do great damage.

My story of finding forgiveness after being conceived in rape

by Monica Kelsey

When I discovered that I was conceived in rape, the uncontrollable emotions of anger and hatred filled my body for several months on into years. I was literally “out to get” my birthfather and wanted to “make him pay” for what he had done to my birthmother. As I learned to cope with and accept the truth, I eventually realized that the only way for me to be at peace was through forgiveness. Forgiving my birthfather for the circumstances of my conception has proven to be one of the most difficult and emotional periods in my life. Only through the grace of God and the support of my husband was I able to accomplish this.
On a cold morning in January, I made a surprise phone call to my birthmother hoping to reconnect and answer questions that I have had for many years. A few hours later my husband and I were making the three hour trip in the snow to visit the woman that placed me up for adoption 37 years prior. It was an amazing reunion and she was absolutely beautiful in every single way.

After visiting with her for a while, as I was holding my husband’s hand, I asked her “Who is my birthfather?” The look on her face is one I will never forget. Her eyes squinted and an instant look of sadness had overcome her. After a long uncomfortable silence, nothing prepared me for what I heard next. It was like watching a movie about someone else’s life. My birthmother began to tell me about a dark night in 1972 where she was brutally raped and left along the side of the road to die. My heart sank as she was telling me this horrible story. I could not immediately comprehend that she was describing the circumstances of my conception and I kept asking myself “What does this have to do with me?”
My husband’s hand started to grab my hand a little bit tighter. She went on to say her mother took her to the hospital and then to the police station to press charges. Her life was in a total tail spin and she was quickly falling into a depression. Then a few weeks later her worst nightmare come true. She found out she was pregnant with me. As my birthmother sat in her living room telling me the graphic details I started to wonder how anyone could do this to another human being. How could this man, or monster was a better word, force a woman against her will?
monica-kelsey1With advice from her mother, she went to a back alley abortion clinic hoping to “get her life back” and to forget what had happened. After showing up to this “so called” clinic and while standing in front of the man who was going to take my life, she changed her mind. She left the clinic and never looked back. Her mother hid her from the outside world, she gave birth to me and never even looked at me. She didn’t even know if I was a boy or girl. At this point, I was so angry with this man who raped her, I didn’t even truly understand that he was my biological father. That shock finally hit me for a few days later.
After accepting the truth I grew more and more angry with my biological father for what he had done. My birthmother fell into a deep depression which led to alcohol and drug abuse for many years. I wanted revenge on my birthfather for his mistreatment of my birthmother and these emotions eventually consumed my life for many months.
My birthmother passed away in March of 2013. In one of my final conversations with her, I asked how she had felt about my birthfather. Her response was shocking to me. She said “I had forgiven him a long time ago, he doesn’t control me anymore”. She went on to say that he had controlled her life for so many years and she was finally strong enough to take her life back. She then said something that I will never forget. She said “you need to forgive him and free yourself also”. I smiled after she said this statement, for no other reason than the fact that she knew her daughter and she knew I was hurting.
Today, I live my life free and realize that forgiveness is the path to righteousness. I pray for him and his family as well. We all fall short of the glory of God sometimes and it’s an absolute blessing that we all have the power to repent because Jesus died for all of us, even my birthfather. My birthmother once told me “it’s amazing how something so beautiful has come out of something so horrible”. I couldn’t agree more. God sometimes uses our deepest pain to be the launching pad to our greatest calling. I am confident that many babies will have a birthday because of my birthmothers’ story and my courage to tell it!

Nun: Slain Christians' blood drained and sold: Vials from beheading victims 'going for $100,000'

by Jerome R. Corsi

NEW YORK – Atrocities by Syrian jihadist rebels have reached sensational new levels, according to a revered nun working with persecuted Christians and an explosive new video report.
Sister Hatune Dogan told WND in a Skype interview that members of the Syrian opposition are draining the blood of Christians they behead and selling vials to Islamic radicals for $100,000 a piece.
The Syrian Orthodox nun explained that the blood is used in a ritual washing of hands in the belief the act atones for sins and provides privileged access to heaven.
The Christians, she said, are beheaded in ceremonies in which they are forced to kneel, with their hands and feet bound, as the Muslim radicals read a death sentence imposed because the victim refuses to renounce Christianity and embrace Islam.
She detailed how the head of the victim is brutally severed with knives. The blood spurting from their necks is captured in basins and then bottled.
“The Muslims sever the necks and collect the blood in vessels to sell the blood. The Muslims believe that if they kill a Christian and wash their hands in the blood of the Christian, they will go to heaven,” she explained.
She said the sale of the Christian blood “is a big business.”
“With this money, the Muslim terrorists can buy more weapons,” she explained.
Walid Shoebat, a native Arabic-speaking Christian who was a member of the PLO, has called Hatune a Mother Teresa figure in an article that featured her presenting the results of an independent investigation of Christians in Syria under the rule of Muslim fundamentalists.
A video posted on YouTube shows Hatune presenting the results of the investigation in which she discusses how women held captive by Muslims for ransom have been raped and mutilated. She also presents evidence for her claim Muslims are beheading Christians and selling their blood.
“Hatune’s willingness to help the persecuted is so immense that it surpasses what anyone is doing today in the Middle East,” Shoebat has written on his blog.
“Her righteous deeds, of course, receive the vociferous wrath of the jihadists,” Shoebat said.
The nun says she gets “18 death threats in seven languages.”
“But Sister Hatune is no pacifist,” Shoebat writes. “As she ardently believes in denying one’s self, helping the oppressed and turning the other cheek, like a true warrior, she as well zealously believes in taking up a whip and driving out the wicked.”
Independently, Shoebat has published a video of Sunni Muslims playing soccer with the heads of the people they murdered.
WND Middle East correspondent Michael Maloof, a former senior security policy analyst in the office of the secretary of defense, said the “vociferous wrath” from jihadists that Hatune is receiving because of her vigorous effort to protect Christians has made her a prime target of al-Qaida and its affiliate, the Jabhat al-Nusra.
“Al-Nusra, which wants to establish caliphates in Syria and throughout the Middle East, has amply demonstrated that it will kill any ‘infidel,’ even Muslims, who do not subscribe to a strict form of Shariah,” Maloof said. “This places all Christians and other minorities in peril which, in turn, puts Sister Hatune and her companions in al-Nusra’s crosshairs.”
Hatune explained to WND that she was born into a Christian family in Zaz, a village in Turabdeen, Northern Mesopotamia in Turkey, at a time when Christians were being persecuted by both by Turkish and Kurdish Muslims.
According to a biography, her family migrated from Turkey to Germany in 1985 to escape persecution.
She completed her education in Germany. In 1988, she joined the Morephrem Monastery in Losser, Holland, where she entered the sisterhood under the leadership of the Mother Superior Seyde Atto.
In Germany, she completed her degree in practical theology at the Theological Seminar in Mienz, Germany, in 1996. Later, she worked as a psychotherapist in Kathekese Psychotherapy Institute in Augustburg, Germany.
She has visited 38 countries and worked in the Ministry of Charitable and Social Service in Turkey, Africa, India and the Middle East.
She is a member of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church under the Holy See of Antioch.
Hatune is the founder of the Sister Hatune Foundation, registered in the United States in New York. The foundation has a Facebook page. Her various country-specific Internet websites are frequently hacked and often inoperable.
Shoebat has begun accepting contributions through a foundation he created for Hatune, RescueChristians.org.

Westminster Shorter Catechism in Modern English - Question #10

Q. 10. How did God create man?

A. God created man, male and female, in his own image,[a] in knowledge,[b] righteousness, and holiness,[c] with rule over the creatures.[d]

[a] Genesis 1:27

Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
27 And God made of nought a man to his image and likeness; God made of nought a man, to the image of God; God made of nought them, male and female. (And so God made out of nothing a man in his image and likeness; God made out of nothing a man in the image of God; yea, God made them out of nothing, male and female.)

[b] Colossians 3:10

Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
10 and clothe ye the new man [and clothing the new man], that is made new again into the knowing of God, after the image of him that made him;

[c] Ephesians 4:24

Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
24 and clothe ye the new man, which is made after God in rightwiseness and holiness of truth. [and clothe ye the new man, which after God is made of nought in rightwiseness and holiness of truth.]

[d] Genesis 1:28

Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
28 And God blessed them, and said, Increase ye, and be ye multiplied, and fill ye the earth, and make ye it subject; and be ye lords to the fishes of the sea, and to [the] volatiles of (the) heaven(s), and to all living beasts that be moved on [the] earth (and be ye lords, or rule ye, over the fishes of the sea, and the birds of the air, and all the living beasts that move on the earth).

Psalm 8

Wycliffe Bible (WYC)
8 To the overcomer, for pressers, the psalm of David. Lord, thou art our Lord; thy name is full wonderful in all [the] earth. For thy great doing is raised up, above (the) heavens. (To the overcomer, at the winepresses, the song of David. Lord, thou art our Lord; thy name is most wonderful in all the earth. And thy great doing is raised up, above the heavens.)
2 Of the mouth of young children, not speaking and sucking milk, thou hast made perfect praising, for thine enemies; that thou destroy the enemy and the avenger. (Out of the mouths of young children, who do not speak, but who suck milk, thou hast rebuked thy mighty enemies; yea, thou hast destroyed the enemy and the avenger.)
3 For I shall see thine heavens, the works of thy fingers; the moon and the stars, which thou hast founded.
4 What is a man, that is mankind, that thou art mindful of him; either the son of a virgin [or the son of man], for thou visitest him? (What is a man, that is humankind, that thou art mindful of him; or who is the son of a man, that thou should care about him?)
5 Thou hast made him a little less than (the) angels; (but) thou hast crowned him with glory and honour,
6 and thou hast ordained him above the works of thine hands. Thou hast made subject all things under his feet; (and thou hast ordained him over all thy creatures. Yea, thou hast put all things under his feet;)
7 all sheep and oxen, furthermore and the beasts of the field; (all the sheep and the oxen, and furthermore, the beasts of the fields, that is, the wild beasts;)
8 the birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea, (and all the other creatures) that pass by the paths of the sea. (and the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and all the other creatures that go along the paths of the sea.)
9 Lord, our Lord; how wonderful is thy name in all [the] earth.

Comment on Q. 10

God used a pattern when he created man, and that pattern was himself, his own image! Man was made to be like God on the creaturely level. Man as created knew God, thought and acted righteously, and was pure in heart and full of love for his Maker. Man is the special creation of God.

Man is made as a race – a creature reproducing itself through successive generations. It is our descent from Adam and Eve that gives us kinship by blood with all other human beings on earth (Acts 17:26).

Franklin Graham Urges Believers to Fight 'Religious War Against Christians and Biblical Truths'

December 31, 2013|4:05 pm
Using the recent "Duck Dynasty" incident as an example, in a statement on Monday, Franklin Graham expressed his disappointment that many Christians had avoided taking a "stand" on the issue and urged them to combat "the religious war" that has attacked and disparaged their values.
Graham, who is the CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelical Assocation and chairman of humanitarian relief organization Samaritan's Purse, said while he was pleased to see how the Robertsons had stood by family patriarch Phil's comments on homosexuality and race, he was frustrated that more churches did not speak out.
"I appreciate the Robertson family's strong commitment to biblical principles and their refusal to back down under intense media pressure over Phil Robertson's comments in a recent interview," wrote Graham on the Billy Graham Evangelical Assocation website. "As the Robertson controversy winds down—at least for now—I have been amazed at how many churches have apparently "ducked" out on the issue (sin). Some were even quick to condemn Phil Robertson."
Graham, who is a frequent guest on cable news network shows, said that it was imperative that Christians take their faith seriously in the public square and avoid becoming complicit in an agenda that does not have their interests at heart.
"If we Christians banded together and took a stand, perhaps we wouldn't be losing so much ground in what the media is calling the 'cultural war,'" wrote Graham. "However, it is not a cultural war—it is a religious war against Christians and the biblical truths we stand for. Some churches have fallen into the trap of being politically correct, under the disguise of tolerance."
The son of the 20th century's most famous evangelist also suggested that striving to be "politically correct" was synomous with condoning sin, and quoted Jesus' words on hell to highlight how dire it is that Christians speak out against it.
"God is not 'politically correct,' and He is certainly not tolerant of sin," wrote Graham. "The Bible tells us that He is going to judge all sin one day; and anyone who is not found under the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, will face an eternity in hell separated from God."
"Scripture says, 'So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth' (Matthew 13:49-50). But today, God is willing to forgive anyone who truly repents (is willing to turn from their sin), asks for His forgiveness, and believes on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ ('For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved,' Romans 10:13)," he added.
The day before A&E reinstated Phil for his "coarse" comments on Dec. 27, Graham wrote on his blog that he "[supported] his friend, Phil Robertson."

How to Be Productive In 2014

By Matt Perman

The Bible speaks very highly of planning. For example, Proverbs tells us to “commit your work to the Lord and your plans will be established” (Proverbs 16:3) and that “the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty” (Proverbs 21:5). Likewise, Paul planned (Romans 15:20-28), Jesus planned (Luke 9:51), and God plans (Isaiah 46:9-10; Ephesians 1:9-11; Acts 2:23). If we are going to reflect God’s image and glory in the world, we can’t run our lives on the fly. Like God, we need to plan. There is a problem, though: the process of planning is often cumbersome and overwhelming. At one point several years ago, when I was new to the process of planning, I had something like fifty goals I was trying to keep in motion. That was way too much! In addition to this, many people make New Year’s resolutions, only to cast them aside within just a few weeks. Research indicates that 81% of people who set New Year’s resolutions fail to accomplish them. How can we take advantage of the “new start” of 2014 to set goals and create plans that we won’t ditch right out of the gate? I would suggest the key lies in simplicity. It’s impossible to keep fifty goals in front of you, but it is possible to keep three goals in front of you. If you add to this the discipline of reviewing your goals and updating them regularly, then with prayer, discipline, and creativity, it is possible to make your goals happen. With that in mind, here’s what I call the “3-3-4″ system for setting goals for the year that you can actually accomplish.

1. Set three goals for the year. That’s what the first “three” in the name stands for: three goals for the year. One should pertain to your professional life, one to your personal life, and one should be a learning goal. For example, my learning goal for this year is to learn in more detail about ending extreme poverty. It may sound slightly audacious to think that’s even possible, but as many have pointed out (such as Scott Todd of Compassion International’s Live58 initiative), it is indeed possible to end extreme poverty in our generation. I’ve been learning about this for a while, but I have fifteen books left that I want to read on this subject. I’ve made it a goal for the year to get through them.

2. Break your three goals into smaller pieces. Specifically, break each goal down into a sub-goal that you can accomplish in the next three months. This is the second “three” in the system—take your three overarching goals for the year and break them down into three goals for the first quarter of the year. With my learning goal, for example, that might mean my goal for the first quarter is to read five of the books on ending poverty by the end of March.

3. Review your goals and create sub-goals for the next quarter. At the end of each quarter, review your yearly goals and break off another piece, creating it as a sub-goal for the next quarter. For example, with my learning goal, the goal for the second quarter would probably become “read the next five books.” Or, if I hadn’t accomplished my objective of getting the first five books read yet, the goal might become “read ten books this quarter.”Alternatively, I might realize that fifteen books is too many (unlikely!), and realize I have to modify my goal for the year. This is the beauty of the system: it allows you to set concrete objectives while adapting and remaining flexible—which is at the essence of effective planning. You then repeat this process each quarter, which is the number “four” in the “3-3-4″ system: do this for each of the four quarters of the year. In other words, since there are four quarters in a year, you set three goals for the year (the first “3”), break them down into three sub-goals for the first quarter (the second “3”), and repeat this for each of the four quarters of the year (the “4”).

Before you start planning…
The last thing to remember here is that, even with the best planning and discipline, our goals might not always turn out the way we hoped. Even Paul, the most effective church planter in history and a model of planning and setting goals (Romans 1:10-13; 15:20-33), apparently did not accomplish his goal of reaching Spain. But the plans he made were nonetheless an essential component through which God brought about what he had planned for Paul. God often will bless our plans and cause them to happen (Proverbs 16:3). But we must ever remain flexible and do our planning in complete dependence on God, realizing that “it is heaven that rules” (Daniel 4:26)—not us. This doesn’t make our planning irrelevant, but it does mean that we should expect some twists and turns. God sometimes will do some amazing things that may seem like setbacks. but in fact are going to take us quite far beyond anything we might have planned or imagined (Ephesians 3:20). And, I would suggest, it is precisely the planning that we do which equips us and makes us ready for those surprising opportunities God brings our way.
