Pastor: As Father of Four Adopted Children, Being Forced to Cover Abortions Is ‘Repulsive Beyond Words’

For 36 years, Jim Garlow didn’t know his first adopted child was the result of a rape.

But after his wife Carol lost a six-year battle with cancer last year, their daughter, Janie, went in search of her birth mother. In succeeding, Janie also discovered the horrific circumstances of her own conception.

The story spurs Jim Garlow, a pastor in California, to fight a state mandate that his church’s employee health plan pay for elective abortions.

When Janie’s birth mother was a freshman in high school, two senior boys asked her to go to the movies. Instead, they took her to an open field, where they raped her. She became pregnant.

Heroically, the teenage girl decided not to get an abortion but to keep the baby until birth, then give her up for adoption.

In an emotional interview with The Daily Signal, Garlow says the decision that spared his future daughter wasn’t the result of her birth mother’s “profound religious convictions” but because “she felt like it was the right thing to do.”

Janie, now 37, became the first of four children whom Jim and Carol Garlow would adopt. Those children — Josie Garlow Debus, Jake Garlow, Josh Garlow and Janie Garlow McGarity — are all grown today.

Garlow, 67, is senior pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego, founded in 1954 as part of the Wesleyan denomination. After the death of his first wife, he married Rosemary Schindler, an active advocate for Christians all over the world.

Their father regards the four Garlow children as the fruit of four women who made the “courageous” decision to go through with their pregnancies. The most courageous of all, he says, was Janie’s mother.

Garlow, who in 1995 became the third senior pastor in Skyline’s 60-year history, holds a doctorate in historical theology from Drew University. He received a master’s degree in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and a master of divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary.

His religious beliefs, combined with a deep gratitude for the four mothers who chose to keep their unborn children, have anchored his pro-life views.

And then this fall, the unimaginable happened: Garlow discovered the state of California was forcing him and the staff of his church to pay for  health insurance plans that cover elective abortions.  They have no choice.

The state’s rule, the pastor says, defies every fiber of his being:

I feel that not only [that] the killing of babies in the womb is wrong foundationally, but as a father who had the privilege of adopting four children … was repulsive beyond words.

Garlow didn’t know how to break the news to his tight-knit congregation. After he was asked to speak at a congressional briefing Dec. 1,  though, he sent an e-blast to parishioners, writing:

I apologize for bringing bad news. This is shocking … and repulsive. As of last Aug. 22, our California state government (not Obamacare, this is the state) has required all insurance policies to cover elective abortions. This includes us as a church. We – along with other churches and Christian colleges – are protesting this coercive and intrusive action by filing formal protests against this abusive action. I will be speaking on this topic this week in Washington, D.C., at a special hearing at which we are strongly urging the federal government to step in immediately and pass the ‘Abortion Non-Discrimination Act.’ Pray for me as I speak. And pray for Congress to act – now.

Call it ironic: Churches in California are forced to pay for abortions through employee health insurance, but under Obamacare are supposed to be exempt from paying for contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs for their employees.

Since 2005, under a measure known as the Weldon Amendment, Congress has prohibited states that receive certain federal funds from discriminating against insurance plans that don’t provide abortion coverage. The Hyde Amendment, first passed in 1976, prohibits using federal tax money to pay for elective abortions.

So how did this happen in California?

The state’s abortion mandate didn’t go through the normal legislative process, says Casey Mattox, a senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, which champions religious liberty.

Mattox, who represents Garlow’s Skyline Church and seven other churches in California, recalls how the issue of contraceptives was debated as part of Obamacare:

Legislatures realized, ‘We can’t force churches to pay for contraceptives,’ that clearly you have to exempt churches from that mandate. [State lawmakers] were able to put in appropriate exemptions to make sure at least some aspect of religious liberty was protected, but this [California] abortion mandate just went through a bureaucratic process. It’s basically a sneak attack on religious liberty. It came out of nowhere.

The California Department of Managed Health Care mandated that, effective Aug. 22, almost all health insurance plans must cover elective abortions.

The rule came after the American Civil Liberties Union convinced state insurance officials that abortion is a “basic health service.” Siding with the ACLU, state bureaucrats decided the agency no longer would approve health plans that don’t cover the life-ending procedure.

“There was no opportunity for churches to weigh in on the process,” Mattox says.

In September, the lawyer filed an administrative complaint on behalf of Garlow and other California pastors with the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The pastors have yet to receive a response.

Sarah Torre, a policy analyst who follows religious liberty cases for The Heritage Foundation, says that in the current legal landscape, the decision before pastors such as Garlow is this: Continue offering health insurance covering procedures that end the life of unborn children, or drop insurance altogether.

“So Pastor Garlow and others can do nothing but wait on bureaucrats in HHS to enforce the law,” Torre says.

Churches and other religious organizations can avoid the mandate by self-insuring, but it’s a costly endeavor that could take months, even years.

“We can’t self-insure, Garlow says. “We’d need years of preparation to be in that kind of posture economically.”

Garlow and others appealed to Congress, hoping his story would spur legislation to protect the conscience rights of individuals and churches.

A total of 132 lawmakers, led by Reps. Diane Black, R-Tenn. and Rep. John Fleming, R-La., wrote Nov. 25 to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to express “deep concern” over the California abortion mandate.

“Forcing pastors, teachers, social service providers and Catholic institutions to pay for abortion should be unthinkable,” they wrote.

HHS has yet to respond to the lawmakers’ request to enforce the Weldon Amendment in California.

It is clear that Burwell “does not intend to enforce the law,” Fleming told The Daily Signal.

Conservative lawmakers are pushing for passage of the Abortion Non-Discrimination Act, part of H.R. 940, which would allow individuals to pursue legal action to protect their religious rights.

Pro-life members of the House and Senate will not back down, Fleming says, but their success depends upon the support from Republican leadership, which previously blamed inaction on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

In January, though, the Nevada Democrat will be succeeded by current Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., when Republicans claim their new nine-seat majority in the Senate as a result of the midterm elections.

“That excuse is getting very weak now that we have won a majority in the Senate and we have a resounding majority in the House,” Fleming says. “It’s time that our GOP leadership begins to get on board.”

Until then, California churches are expected to pay for a life-ending procedure that contradicts the core of their beliefs.

“I can’t fathom us participating in something so horrific and sinful,” Garlow says.

Sadly, the pastor and his supporters believe, he already is.

Week 46 of 52: Survival Caches

Archaic food caches have been found all over the world.  The fact that our ancestors planned for the unexpected gives us a clear picture into their unpredictable lifestyle.  Foods such as nuts and dry goods as well as foraging tools were put away for a time when they needed them the most (Source). Today, we face the same uncertainties in life; and preparing for this sudden upheaval is the best way we can secure our odds at survival.

Survival caches are the ultimate back up plan. If you are going for your survival cache, that means, Plan A and Plan B went awry. In this case, you may be left to survive with only the contents in your cache. Therefore, you must plan out the contents accordingly.

Given the seriousness of this preparedness issue, many preppers see the value in having multiple caches spread out geographically to fall back on in order to lessen the risk of losing everything. Survival caches can be buried or hidden in secure areas around the property to ensure you have extra survival items to fall back on. Keep in mind that before you hide a cache, you need to have chosen a good location preferably within the parameters of your evacuation route. You also want to keep in mind that the best evacuation route would be one that does not require use of highways or frequently used roads.

Ideally, you want some of your cache(s) to be away from your retreat. One prepper in particular I read about has multiple caches along his bug out route and has even gone to great lengths of planting edible native plants he can use as an emergency source of food.

According to this article, a GPS would be ideal as you can program the location of the cache as a way-point in the navigation system. Special markings at the location can also be used as a way to identify the location. For instance, spraying yellow paint on two tree’s to mark that the cache is in between them. Ensure that you keep good track of where you hide your survival cache and also remember to keep the location of your cache quiet. The more people who know about your survival cache, the more vulnerable the cache is to being found and used by someone else.

Many preppers have chosen to hide or bury their caches in different locations and in an assortment of containers ranging from enclosed PVC pipes, water proof ammunition containers, 50-gallon drums and even small water bottles. To waterproof the edges of a pvc pipe use an extra bead of silicone sealant as a fail-safe. Whichever container you choose, ensure to keep the following suggestions in mind:

Keep your storage space in mind. The best storage space for survival supplies will be in a cool, dry location that features elevated shelving and is sealed against rodents.

Disaster caches should stock enough water to last a set number of people for several days. Normally, a person needs 2-liters of water per day. If your cache is for an isolated cabin with a reliable water source, a distiller or carbon filtration system and boiler are more important than a large supply of bottled water.

Select and purchase a wide variety of canned goods. Most vegetables, many fruits and all meats are best stored in canned form, and the typical canned food product has a shelf life measured in years. Note: ensure that you have a means of opening your canned goods or purchase canned goods that are of the “pop top” variety.

Supplement the canned goods with a multi-vitamin.

Stock coffee and tea. Or, if you have small children, consider storing some packages of kool-aid or powdered drink mixes. These treats will boost morale, and they have a long shelf life.

Stock cooking oil and extra cooking fuel. These are critical for cooking in the long haul.

Store dried grains, such as flour, rice and corn or corn meal. Beans are also a good idea. These items will last almost as long as the canned goods.

Consider growing mushrooms. If you have a cool, dark space (such as the cellar of an old cabin) you can set up a mushroom farm and let it take care of itself for months at a time. This is the only food that can be put into a survival cache that will partially replenish itself.

So, what items would you stash away? Would they be day-to-day essentials like canned goods, freeze-dried foods or would you stash hunting gear so that you can hunt for wild game? Depending on the size of the container, you could also include other necessary supplies that will benefit your basic survival needs. For example, if you were burying a 50-gallon drum or a large water-proof ammunition container, you could bury a fully packed bug-out bag. Here are some ideas from a previous newsletter on evacuation readiness. How great would it be to have everything you need for survival, just in case? Here are some other thoughts on what to store in a survival cache would be:

Choose the best survival cache container that fits your needs. Remember, you may need to solely rely on the contents in this container one day so be thorough when stocking it and keep track of where you hide it.

MRE’s, freeze-dried food, canned goods

Small fire starting kit (matches/lighters)

Knife

Duct tape

Hand-crank radio

Flashlight and extra batteries

Action Items:

Have multiple evacuation routes planned in the instance that Plan A and Plan B do not work.

Make list of what items you want to have in your survival cache.

Find a good location, along the planned evacuation routes and bury or hide your survival cache.

Practice getting to the survival cache using different modes of transportation to see how long it will take to get there.

Create multiple caches if necessary.

Sin has profound economic consequences. Our collective fall into sin has left us self-centered and quite present-oriented. We are now, by nature, bent towards irresponsibility … that is … we will not naturally use God’s gifts and talents as we should. Some men will steal and hoard and seek to control the possession of others. Some will squander and waste the possessions they have and make no effort to produce more. All men seem to naturally want what isn’t theirs. Oppression, sloth, waste and theft are givens in a fallen world. We see it in the headlines each day.

God’s curse on sin likewise has serious economic consequences (Gen. 3:16-19). The curse even sets limits on our productivity. It guarantees a scarcity of food and forces sinful men to cooperate economically. In Paradise fruit was hanging from every tree … now the Earth gives up her fruit grudgingly. We must work by the sweat of our brow. We have to deal with thorns and thistles, sickness and death. We must bargain and trade with other sinful, grasping men in order to make a living. Even as greed, envy and fear at times pushes us apart, the need to trade for goods and services pulls us back together again. In this respect the curse is something of a backhanded blessing as well as an aspect of common grace.

Of course, sin even complicates trade. First, each man seeks his own interests, his own good, and often at the expense of the other party … sometimes, to his harm. Trade often falters because of suspicion and ill will. Second, many men deal falsely. Even in the old days it was common to put the best apples on top of the barrel or feed the cattle salt so it drank lots of water and weighed more at the time of sale. On the buyer side … some folks lie about their ability to pay, or they delay payment contrary to their promises. This, too, discourages trade. Third, we all know that some men rob and steal. They use force or cunning to take other people’s goods. Their victims have fewer goods to trade and may not have enough remaining capital to get back on their feet.

Civil Government

Because of these daily realities, God has ordained civil government and given it a measure of authority in the market place (Rom. 13:1-7). God’s law makes robbery, theft and fraud civil crimes, and it is the business of civil government to apply and enforce God’s laws against these crimes vigorously (Ex. 22:1-15; cf. Lev. 19:11-13). There are some transactions, however, that ought to be completely illegal. God’s law tells us that some goods and services are neither good nor true service: the work of the hit man, the prostitute, the slave-trader, and the idol-maker come to mind. In this respect, God’s law is not libertarian.

Now notice that the function of civil government is primarily negative. God has given the State the power of the sword (Rom. 13:4). The sword represents deadly force. The civil government is not creative in any economic sense. It can’t produce economic goods and it shouldn’t try to provide consumer services. Should we really want someone holding a sword (or gun) to educate our children, supervise our medical care or see to our retirement? As far as Scripture is concerned, taxes ought to pay primarily for law enforcement and civil defense (Rom. 13:1-7). Those are the areas where deadly force (or the threat of it) has the best application.

Sinful man, however, tries to turn civil government itself into an agent of theft and fraud. Kings steal from their people and so do democracies and bureaucracies. Some theft is direct while some is more subtle. The State may simply take its citizens’ property, with or without some attempt at justification. The State may debase, dilute or inflate the nation’s money supply: this steals the value of everyone’s money, robs savings and complicates investment. Or the State may pass laws and regulations that interfere with its citizens’ ability to operate their businesses or transact business in the market freely.

The Free Market

Rarely will a man knowingly and willingly enter into an economic transaction in which he sees himself to be the loser, right upfront. A man trades grain for gold because, at the moment, he values the gold more than the grain. His trading partner accepts the grain and gives up his gold because he considers the grain more valuable, at least in that same moment. Each walks away from this transaction, convinced he is the winner. “It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth” (Prov. 20:14). A lack of trust and good can slow down the process, but the natural scarcity of goods and our desire to have more than we currently have … has fostered trade quite well, even to an international level.

Limits on Civil Government

God does not give the State any authority to interfere with trade, local or international, beyond the limits we have already discussed. In fact, any attempt by the State to take, control or limit the use of its citizens’ property beyond the boundaries set in Scripture is itself theft. Within the limits of God’s law, it should be lawful for a man to use his property as he pleases (Matt. 20:15). This means that the use of eminent domain, wage and price controls, government subsidies to business, tariffs, corporate bailouts, inflation or debasement of the money supply, and government regulations that deliberately favor one party over another are all legalized theft and are illegal. Socialism, whether Marxist or Fascist (National Socialism), is simply institutionalized theft and inherently destructive.

In a fallen world, the best civil government, then, is a civil government that is severely limited in its function, decentralized in its structure, and bound by written law in its operation. That law must be the application and implementation of God’s law as it is found in Scripture. Any other law will be marred and twisted by man’s greed and selfishness. Of course, no law, not even God’s, can compel men to be honest or prevent civil rulers from stealing. That requires the grace of God in Jesus Christ. Only men who fear God have a good reason not to steal. It’s important to understand that our current economic realities … should always point us back to the Gospel.

DHS, FEMA & THE EPA HAVE TAKEN OVER YOUR CHURCH

The churches of America continue to fail in their primary duty to their members, namely, to preach the word of God for the purpose of saving souls. There are the continuing assaults upon our churches and there are new threats to the viability of the Christian churches in America as well. There is only one inescapable conclusion, the Christian spirit in America’s churches is dead on arrival. It is highly likely that your pastor is bought and paid for by DHS or the EPA or some other alphabet soup federal agency. The message of the Bible has been subverted to promote the message of the government.

Maryland County Pushes Churches to Preach Environmentalism In Exchange for Tax Credits

According to the Washington Post, churches in Prince George County, a Maryland county, are being offered tax breaks for incorporating environmentalism into their sermons. Subsequently, 30 pastors have started preaching ‘green’ ministries to avoid extra taxes. The number of participating pastors is certain to grow as the symbolic globe of the New World Order is replacing the traditional cross. 

Looking into he background of this tax revealed that the EPA demanded a tax at the state level to cover the cost of “run off” into Chesapeake Bay. The EPA leaned heavily on the States and the State began to lean on the Church. This led to a “storm management fee,” passed by the state legislature in 2012, which will now  go into effect following a decree from Democrat Governor Martin O’Malley.

Maryland has subsequently ordered its 10 largest counties to raise almost $15 billion dollars to pay for mitigating “run-offs”.

This is all EPA driven and controlling the message of the church has long the goal of the government.

Interestingly, nobody is point out that the EPA and the 30 pastors are violating the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment. If I live in Prince George County, as a homeowner, I might be willing to impart the lessons of environmentalism to my family, but nobody from the government is coming to offer me a tax break for doing so. Subsequently, the “tax break” is not being applied uniformly. It would seem that the government values controlling word of God more than the word of a father in his own home.

It is hypocritical and unconstitutional that the government does everything it can do to keep the word of God from reaching our children in public schools, but the government can’t wait to control the message from the pulpit. And in Maryland, the word of Jesus is being replaced by the dictates of environmental director Adam Ortiz. Someone should remind Mr. Ortiz that the allegation that man is the primary cause of CO2 has been disproven and that the exposed “Climategate emails” exposed the fraud being the “green movement”. Despite the exposed fraud of the movement, the pseudoscience continues.

Houston Mayor Demands copies of Sermon Notes

Last May, Houston Mayor Annise Parker, an avowed Lesbian and two homosexual city council members rammed through a non-discrimination ordinance that gave special rights and protections to homosexuals and lesbians. The proposed “bathroom bill” ordinance passed despite vocal opposition by the Houston community, which was led by local churches and pastors. The mayor anticipated that the pastors in her fair city might push back. Subsequently, she demanded copies of their sermon notes and private communications in order to monitor the opposition from the church.

Even though the mayor and her cronies were forced to withdraw the demand, based upon a “technicality”, there were some pastor’s who were willing to comply with the demands to produce notes of private communications between church members and copies of sermon notes under threat of subpoena.  Someone should remind these pastor’s that their communications are protected by privilege and they are duty-bound by law to protect their communications, within their church, with all due diligence and zeal. It would appear that the “confessional” isn’t what it used to be.

Continuing Threats to the Church

Previously, I have detailed an outright assault on the compromising of the word of God with regard to the government’s manipulation of the tax-exempt status of IRS controlled churches. Specifically, I am speaking about the concept of 50-1c-3 tax-exempt churches.

Is your church a friend or foe with regard to your salvation? Is your church is a 501-C-3 tax exempt church? Is your church an agent of the government? If your church leadership does not condemn anything controversial, no matter how antithetical to the word of God, you are not worshiping in a Christian church. If your church is a 501-C-3 tax exempt church, your church is not a church of God. 

DHS now demands that the pastors preach a bastardized version of Romans 13.  Does your pastor command you to follow the will of the government because it is your Christian duty to do so under Romans 13? In the following paragraphs it will be revealed that your pastor is likely bought and paid for and you will be told how to prepare for martial law, “quarantining” and firearms confiscation and that it is your “Christian duty” to comply with the government. 

The modern interpretation of Romans 13 is pure blasphemy. This scripture has been morphed into a doctrine espousing the “Divine Right of Kings” in which God has somehow chosen a king to ruthlessly rule over a people and it is incumbent upon the people to accept their “God-given fate”,  The flock are commanded to “…submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.”  This false interpretation is nothing but a divine coronation of a ruthless, self-serving government and Christians are expected to capitulate and honor the same kind of thievery, lawlessness and murder which inspired Jesus to expel the moneychangers from the Temple.

The Clergy Response Team

Many of your 501-C-3 pastors have gone so far as to put on the uniform of the enemy and it is called the Clergy Response Team. The Clergy Response Team falls under the umbrella series of programs known as DHS’ controlled  National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NOVAD) which is a non-profit, member organization which shares knowledge and resources throughout a disaster. The organization helps to prepare, respond, recover and to mitigate the damage caused by some unknown disaster presumably which lies in the future of humanity.

Amazingly, NOVAD claims to be a faith-based coalition which is structured as a non-governmental organization and operates on a national scale and is supported by tax dollars funneled to the DHS.

Instantly, Bible believing Christians should smell a rat. Since when, in the modern era, has the federal government ever sponsored organized religion? The answer is not since well before the advent of the atheist activist, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, who was successful in banning prayer in the public schools in 1963. Then why would the government suddenly fund and support a “faith-based organization” on a national scale?  The simple answer is that Homeland Security is seeking to control our churches and ministers, before the impending train wreck comes to fruition inside of America. DHS desperately is seeking to control all Christians through the perversion of Romans 13 and this is one of two cornerstones in this movement designed to control Christian leaders. And this government foothold into the control of our churches begins with accepting the 501-C-3 tax exempt status which gives the government license to control the message and to ultimately pervert the word of God. There can only be one outcome for this kind of training, making the people docile when martial law is rolled out.

If your church is a 501(c)(3) organization, then your church has a significant financial motivation to not truthfully interpret the true message of the Bible. The tax exempt status of being a 501(c)(3) organization is the other cornerstone of this shift away from allegiance to God and towards worshiping our new Savior, the federal government. When was the last time your pastor spoke out against abortion or homosexuality? Unless I missed the fact that God personally rewrote sections of the Bible, your pastor’s failure to stand up to the liberalism of the New World Order should have tipped you off that something was terribly wrong with your church.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, no substantial part of a religious, tax exempt church may engage in any activity which may be attempting to influence legislation and the church may not intervene in political campaigns. In other words, if the government decides to secretly disappear dissidents under the NDAA,  the church must remain silent or risk losing its tax exemption. If the government continues to expand its infanticide policies by extending the murder of babies to include post-delivery abortion, then the church must remain silent. If the government engages in any heinous, genocidal act, such as the murder of 1.2 million Iraqi’s, under the false pretense of looking for weapons of mass destruction, the church must remain silent or risk losing the tax advantages for being a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization.

Mark 8:39 clearly states, “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” This page must be absent from almost all the pastor’s Bibles in today’s pulpits. Mark possessed the courage to pay a price for his faithfulness. This kind of faithfulness should be embraced by all who claim to lead our congregations in the name of God. Isn’t a church tax-exempt by its very nature and this renders the concept of 501-c-3 tax exemption to be a moot point? Yes,the principle is upheld by the First Amendment.

Pastor’s have let Judas’ fate become their own.

The 501-C-3 tax exemption = 30 pieces of silver

Preaching environmentalism = 30 pieces of silver

Pastor’s giving copies of sermons to Houston’s mayor = 30 pieces of silver 

Conclusion

All Pastor’s who lead 501-C-3 churches, need to fall to their knees and beg for God’s forgiveness for leading his flock astray through espousing the false doctrine of government over the King of kings. According to Yahoo Answers, nearly all churches are a 501-C-3 tax exempt status.

In the meantime, save your tithe for the home Bible study group that you are going to form. Stop feeding the beast.

Mathew 18:20 does not state that where two or three thousand gather in my name at a 501-c-3 church preaching environmentalism, there I am with them. 

Matthew 18:20 states that For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” 

In the same manner that homeschooling works, so does home Bible study. I would encourage all Christians to withdraw their support for their government run church.
