The Death of Christianity in America (Part II)

There’s a troubling trend in Conservatism today… a tendency toward conservative Godlessness.

To the point that Christianity is ridiculed by the same people who claim to revere the founding and the Founders. I contend that these people no more represent the Founders than the Pope represents the Hells’ Angels.
John Adams was one of America’s Founders, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The words of this man dispel the myth of a Godless Founding. He believed that an America based on the Constitution would not work outside the provision or the people of God,

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” [October 11, 1798]

And if there’s any question as to what “religion” John Adams was making reference to he went on to say:

“The general principles upon which the Fathers achieved independence were the general principals of Christianity… I will avow that I believed and now believe that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

Along with John Hancock, Mr. Adams then made this declaration:

“We Recognize No Sovereign but God, and no King but Jesus!” [April 18, 1775]

Benjamin Franklin gave a nod to God’s role in our founding by saying:

“God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel” [Constitutional Convention of 1787]

In writing after writing, the Founders proclaimed the importance of God and Christianity in America.

To even the most casual observer of history, it should be abundantly clear that these contentions were shared by each of Founders. God and His Word, as declared in the Bible, were woven throughout the tapestry of their language and of the Founding Documents. It’s as if they all cried in unison, “There is no civil society without God!” and America has declared it now for over 2 centuries.
Faith in God is not a thing that can be laid down and picked up on a whim. Without God and His Word, the values that made America great cease to exist. Without God and His Word the morality that guides our steps is replaced by sin and self. And it is no different for a Nation.

A just society will not remain so in the absence of a righteous God.
